Where can I find information about the Ancient Olympic Games?

LEVEL: Primary / Intermediate

The Ancient Olympic Games were part of a celebration of the God Zeus, father of all the Greek Gods and Goddesses. To learn more about the Games themselves, let's look in the search engine DeeperWeb using the keywords 'Ancient Olympic Games.'  If you search for the words together with speech marks, then the search engine will do a more refined search giving better results.

HOT TIP: We like DeeperWeb because the ‘tag cloud’ on the right suggests search words that will help ‘build’ a search. We can also use it to narrow our results to educational resources or to sites with .org or .govt in the website address.

On the Official Olympic website there is background information on the Ancient Games as well. Many other sites come up, including this one from the Penn Museum, and this from the Scholastic site, which give good basic information.

Travel through an online tour of artefacts related to the ancient games at the British Museum. If you type 'Ancient Olympic Games' into the search box up the top right, a list of these artefacts and their description with images apeears.

HOT TIP: Websites that have .com or .co in the address can have good information, but you need to assess how reliable it is. Check the ‘about us’ link on the website, if you can find one. That can tell you what the company’s mission and values are.

Another recommended site is How Stuff Works which has a great deal of information including how the first Olympic Games worked.
