Who were the Black September terrorist group, and what did they do?

Level: Intermediate / Secondary

A good way to start finding information on this question is to use a search engine like Google and look for your keywords: Black September Group.

One of the websites that comes up is Wikipedia which provides a good background to the Black September terrorist organisation which was based in Palestine.  Most of its ‘activity’ took place during the 1970s and the main target of the attacks was Israel and to a lesser extent Jordan. The operation for which Black September is best remembered is the kidnapping and murder of Israeli athletes and officials during the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich.

HOT TIP: Wikipedia has great coverage of many topics, including Black September, but you need to be aware that this information is contributed by lots of different people. If you are using this site, it always pays to check the information against that on other sites or in books from the library. One of the big pluses of Wikipedia is the inclusion of other links and references which you can use.

For another point of view we would suggest that you have a look at World History in Context and search for Black September Group. You can choose to look at different results from encyclopedias, magazine articles, news sources and more! You can access World History in Context through the EPIC databases.

HOT TIP: To get to the EPIC databases you will need a password from your school librarian first. Or, you can log on to AnyQuestions.co.nz between 1 and 6pm Monday to Friday, and one of the librarians can help you online. Some of these databases may also be available through your public library.

September 2012 marked the 50th anniversary of the Munich Massacre and you can find details as to how this event has been remembered in a number of ways by looking at both the BBC archives and also BBC News. We recommend the BBC site as this is one of the world's best known news organisations and it also has a comprehensive collection of archives.
