Where can I find out about the culture and customs of England?

LEVEL: Intermediate

England is one of the four countries that make up the United Kingdom and although there are many similarities wth its neighbours, it does have its own unique culture and customs. England is also co-hosting the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

Some good sources of information on a country's history and culture can be found on the tourist websites, including those for England. Clicking on the About Britain tab at the VisitBritain official tourism site and choose England to find some basic information and links about attractions, culture and food. Details of Rugby World Cup events and an 'explore' map of sites of in England can be found at a related site called VisitEngland. Click on the bar that says 'I'm interested in...' and you can select areas to browse, like Culture and Heritage.

For some general facts we recommend the Woodlands Junior School homework site, called ProjectBritain. This site is about 'Great Britain' (England, Scotland and Wales), and has pages about historyfoodsportscustoms and lots of other topics.

A good place to find more detailed information about a topic like this is by using an online encyclopedia. The Encyclopedia Britannica is a source of reliable information and is one of the EPIC databases. Use the link for Britannica School; holding the cursor over the Middle option will give you a search box. Entering the keyword England will produce a list of results, and a further click on England (country in United Kingdom) leads you to further links, one of which is people and culture. You may want to consider changing the reading level to 3 (top right of page) which has more detailed information with a separate section titled Cultural life.

HOT TIP: To get to the EPIC databases you will need a password from your school librarian first. Or, you can log to between 1 and 6pm Monday to Friday, and one of the librarians can help you online.

A further resource to check is Wikipedia. This online encyclopedia has a comprehensive article on the Culture of England which brings together a number of features on the topic, complimented by links and references for further information. Do be aware that while Wikipedia has great coverage of many topics, the information is contributed by lots of different people. If you are using this site, it always pays to check the information against that on other sites, or in books from the library.

Another site to visit is Every Culture. They have a comprehensive article all about the Culture of England, plus a separate article about the Culture of the United Kingdom as a whole. It can be hard to find out information about who wrote the articles on Every Culture however every article includes references to where they go their information from.

If you want to check out some illustrations of this topic don't forget to have a look at Google Images. Enter the key phrase 'culture of England' and you will find a wide range of options.

HOT TIP: When using Google images you can usually see the full size image by double clicking on the thumbnail sized one.
