Where can I find information about Peter Snell?

LEVEL: Primary

Olympic and Commonwealth Gold Medal winner Peter Snell is one of New Zealand’s greatest sportsmen.  A great place to start looking for information on any Olympic athlete like Peter Snell is the official website of the New Zealand Olympic team. They have a profile of Peter Snell which gives you some information on him as well as the results from the Olympic and Commonwealth Games he took part in.

Another great site we like for finding out about anyone (or anything) from New Zealand history is the New Zealand History Online site.  To find information about Peter Snell just visit the site and type our keywords “Peter Snell” into the search box.  A whole heap of things will come up including stories about the races that Peter Snell took part in and his influence on New Zealand.

Another good site to visit for any New Zealand information is Te Ara: the Encyclopedia of New Zealand. Try a search there for Peter Snell. Many of the articles containing Peter Snell information are about his legendary coach Arthur Lydiard.

HOT TIP: We like these sites because they’re from a government organisation (Ministry or Council) OR a reputable organisation. You can tell this by their web address – they have either .org or .govt in their address, or by the About Us section of their site. They’re also New Zealand sites, so relevant for us. Overseas government websites will have .gov in their web address.

Another place to look is Wikipedia which has great coverage of many topics, including Peter Snell. But you need to be aware that this information is contributed by lots of different people. If you are using this site, it always pays to check the information against that on other sites or in books from the library.

Finally, if you want to see a short film of Peter Snell, visit the fantastic NZ on Screen.  They have a short film there from 1964, just prior to his triumph in Japan.
