Where can I find info on the Wahine disaster?
LEVEL: Primary / Intermediate
We like to recommend the Christchurch City Libraries Kids pages which has great fact sheets on all major NZ disasters.
- Go to the Kids Pages
- Click on the link for Homework Zone (on the left hand side)
- Then look for the link for New Zealand disasters
- Look down the map for Wahine
Need more info? We also like the Museum of Wellington City & Sea, which has some useful fact sheets on their website (including one of the Wahine). From their homepage, select the heading for Resources and choose Fact sheets, then select The Wahine. Note: the fact sheets are PDF documents, so you will need to have Adobe Acrobat reader on your computer.
And NZ History.net also has great resources on the impact of the disaster. From their homepage select the heading for Culture and history, then from the section on Disasters - select the Wahine Disaster.
Also check out our entry on New Zealand disasters for other information, including links to a disasters timeline.
HOT TIP: To find more information on any New Zealand disaster – try visiting your local library. They keep copies of the major New Zealand newspapers, so you can read articles that appeared in the paper at the time.
